Attila is the genus of a group of tyrant flycatchers characterized by having hooked bills and behaving loud and aggressively despite their size, resembling the fierceness of the historical leader Attila The Hun. There are seven species of Attila in the Neotropics, in Costa Rica its only representative is the Bright-rumped Attila (Attila spadiceus).
Attila es el género de un grupo de mosqueros tiránidos que se caracteriza por tener picos ganchudos y comportarse de manera ruidosa y agresiva a pesar de su tamaño, asemejándose a la fiereza del líder histórico Atila El Huno. Hay siete especies de Atila en el Neotrópico, en Costa Rica su único representante es el Bright-rumped Attila (Attila spadiceus).
Honoring its name, in 2019 our friend Erick Barbato documented a Bright-rumped Attila killing an adult male Cerulean Warbler at the Tikal Ruins in Guatemala. Erick told us he was birding and all of a sudden he heard a riot and that's what he found when he set up the scope. We all were awestruck watching the Attila whacking the warbler against the branch, see for yourself!
Haciendo honor a su nombre, en 2019 nuestro amigo Erick Barbato documentó a un Attila spadiceus matando a un macho adulto de Reinita Cerúlea en las Ruinas de Tikal en Guatemala. Erick nos dijo que estaba pajareando ahí y de repente escuchó una especie de escándalo y al colocar su telescopio esta fue la escena que se encontró. Todos nos quedamos asombrados viendo al Atila sacudir a la reinita contra una rama, ¡miren ustedes mismos!
