How would you tell if that silhouette is a wood-pewee? Usually you can tell by its slender shape, tufted head and the way it forages: sallying out and returning to the same perch time after time.

Wood-Pewees spend a lot of time catching insects from high dead branches and snags, which means they are expose to sunlight for long periods. If you spread the wing of an adult individual you can notice a shaded area left by the super-imposed primary feathers due to this behavior. Today we banded this Western Wood-Pewee (Contopus sordidulus) which turned out to be an adult based on the wear of its wing feathers and the shaded area on the primaries as the first photo shows.
Los Contopus pasan mucho tiempo cazando insectos desde altas ramas secas, lo que significa que están expuestos a la luz del sol por largos periodos. Si abrieras el ala de un individuo adulto notarías un área sombreada en el borde de sus plumas primarias superpuestas y es debido a este comportamiento. Hoy anillamos a este Western Wood-Pewee (Contopus sordidulus) que resultó ser un adulto por el desgaste que mostraba en sus plumas de las alas y esa área sombreada producida por efecto de la luz, como se muestra en la primer foto.
