From the 27th of August to the 05th of September 2021, in conjunction with SELVA: , we organized the first workshop on Advanced Techniques for Migratory Bird Research at Las Brisas Nature Reserve, Costa Rica.
Del 27 de agosto al 05 de setiembre 2021, en conjunto con SELVA, organizamos el Primer Taller de Técnicas Avanzadas para la Investigación de Aves Migratorias en Reserva Las Brisas, Costa Rica.
This multinational event involved participants from four different countries representing six different organizations. From Nicaragua were three members of Grupo Quetzallí: Salvadora Morales, Yoleydi Mejía and Danny Munguía; Costa Rica: Luisa Moreno from Instituto Monteverde, Natalie Sánchez from BioAve; Panama: Chelina Batista and Jorge Garzón from ADOPTA. The instructors for this workshop were Nick Bayly and Yuly Caicedo from Selva, Colombia and Paz Angulo and Ernesto Carman from Proyecto Cerúlea, Costa Rica. Most of the participants have collaborated previously in one of Selva’s flagship projects, the Neotropical Flyways Project (www.neotropicalflyways.com).
Este evento multinacional involucró participantes de cuatro países representando a seis organizaciones distintas. De Nicaragua hubo tres miembros del Grupo Quetzallí: Salvadora Morales, Yoleydi Mejía y Danny Munguía; Costa Rica: Luisa Moreno del Instituto Monteverde y Natalie Sánchez de Bioave; Panamá: Chelina Batista y Jorge Garzón de ADOPTA. Los instructores fueron Nick Bayly y Yuly Caicedo de Selva, Colombia y Paz Angulo y Ernesto Carman del Proyecto Cerúlea, Costa Rica. La mayoría de participantes han colaborado en el pasado con uno de los proyectos insignia de SELVA, el Corredor Neotropical de Migración (www.neotropicalflyways.com).
An amazing amount of information was covered during the workshop including the installation of canopy nets, bird banding ethics and best practices, bird ageing using the WRP system, the Motus Wildlife Tracking System including station installation, tag deployment and manual radiotelemetry, as well as how to use the data collected using these techniques.
Durante el taller se cubrió una impresionante cantidad de información incluyendo la colocación de redes de dosel, ética y buenas prácticas en el anillamiento de aves, determinación de edad en aves utilizando el sistema WRP, el Sistema de Monitoreo de Vida Silvestre Motus incluyendo la instalación de estaciones, colocación de transmisores y radio telemetría manual, así como la utilización de los datos colectados con estos métodos.
The main goal of this workshop was to provide researchers in the region with the necessary tools to further develop projects in their own countries, advancing our knowledge about migratory birds in the Neotropics and promoting conservation actions.
El fin principal de este taller era proveer a los investigadores de la región con las herramientas necesarias para desarrollar proyectos en sus propios países, aumentando nuestro conocimiento sobre las aves migratorias en el Neotrópico y promoviendo acciones para su conservación.
